AUGUSTA, Ga. - Charles Thomas Huggins passed away on Friday, July 27, 2012 surrounded by his family. Tom was born on October 19, 1942 in Martin, Tennessee to Charles Willard Huggins and Sarah Fleming Huggins. He graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1960 from Madeira High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Tom graduated from Harvard University in 1964, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. In 1967, he graduated from The University of Georgia School of Law where he served as a founding member of the Georgia Law Review. He began his practice of law as an associate attorney with the law firm of Cumming, Nixon, Eve, Waller, and Capers. In 1981, Tom founded the firm of Huggins and Allen, P.C. with his friend and fellow attorney, Frank W. Allen. He spent the majority of his practice with this firm, specializing in real estate law. Tom was known by his friends and business colleagues for his keen intellect, quick wit, and genuine humility. Based on his willingness to work with and serve others, he was highly regarded as a leader in both his profession and community. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Episcopal Day School, Senior Warden of the Church of the Good Shepherd, President of the Board of Trustees of the Clinton Anderson Foundation, President of the Augusta Assembly, President of the Summerville Neighborhood Association, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Augusta YMCA and Historic Augusta. He was a member of the Beech Island Agricultural Club, the Augusta Symphony League, the Kiwanis Club of Augusta, and the Augusta Country Club. Tom enjoyed a hearty laugh, a long mountain hike, and a round of golf poorly played. He is survived by his wife, Sada Lamar Mason Huggins; his brother The Rev. Dr. John Richard Huggins and his wife, Kathy Huggins; his sister Mary Huggins McLane and her husband, Philip McLane; his children and their spouses: Charles Thomas Huggins, Jr. and Elizabeth Whittaker Huggins; Wilson Perry Huggins and Stephanie Ann Stamper Huggins; and Elizabeth Huggins Elliott and Brandon Riggan Elliott; eight grandchildren: Robert Trevor Huggins, Catherine Elizabeth Huggins, Hailie Maryanna Huggins, John Kevin Huggins, Caroline Whittaker Huggins, Mason Riggan Elliott, Thomas Wesley Elliott, and Anna DeLacy Elliott. The memorial service is scheduled to be held at 6:00 pm at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Tuesday, July 31st.
