NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Funeral Services for Mr. George W. Counts, 86, of North Hills Drive, North Augusta, SC, who entered into rest December 29, 2013, will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock from Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor Roy Butler officiating. Interment in Pineview Memorial Park . Mr. Counts was a native of Orangeburg, SC, grew up in Greenwood, SC and made North Augusta his home for the past 58 years. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1944, attended The Citadel for two years and received a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II, the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal. Mr. Counts began work for the US Army Corps of Engineers as an Electrical Engineer and retired with 35 years of service from Clarks Hill Dam. During his career he received commendations for his outstanding performance of duties as Chief of South Atlantic Division's Hydropower Test Section in 1978, Chief, Hydro Power Test Section, Operations Division in 1979 and as Chief of the SAD Hydropower Test Section in 1983. Mr. Counts served as Chapter President of the Augusta Chapter, Georgia Society of Professional Engineers from 1961 to 1962. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, enjoyed studying genealogy and researching his family history. He and his wife loved to travel and visited Alaska, China, Russia, Italy, England, Germany the Netherlands, France and Spain during their retirement years. Mr. Counts was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Mary Counts and two brothers, Buddy Counts and Jimmy Counts. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Vivian Chiles Counts; two sons, William (Jerri ) Counts, North Augusta and Steve (Ann) Counts, Laguna Niguel, CA; a daughter, Irene (Dave) Rivers, Raleigh, NC; five grandchildren, John (Noi) Counts, Nathan (Pamela) Counts, Grady Counts, Patrick Yeh and Rachel Yeh; two great-granddaughters, Amanda Counts and Stephanie Counts; a sister, Francis Harrison, Laurens, SC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this Tuesday evening from 5 until 7. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Sterling House Assisted Living Facility in North Augusta for their care of George during the two and a half years of his residency.
