NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Graveside Services for Mr. Gordon George Chalfant, Jr., 79, who entered into rest April 25, 2013, will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in Pineview Memorial Park. Minister Scott Patterson officiating. Mr. Chalfant was a native of Kansas City, Missouri, having made the North Augusta-Aiken area his home for the past 58 years. He was a graduate of La Salle High School, Niagara Falls, NY and Tulane University where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Chalfant obtained a Professional Engineer Rating from the State of Louisiana and was past president of the Aiken Chapter of the Society of Professional Engineers. He was employed by E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant for 34 years where he held the position of Staff Engineer and was assigned to DOE Headquarters in Washington for licensing nuclear weapons packaging. During his time at the Savannah River Plant, he was responsible for the design, testing and licensing of radioactive shipping containers for the Department of Energy. Mr. Chalfant was awarded a patent on the design of a radioactive shipping container, known as the Chalfant Container, which is still in use today. He was a member of Central Church of Christ in Augusta and Banner Elk Church of Christ in Banner Elk, NC. Upon retiring Gordon and Mary enjoyed spending the summers in Linville Land Harbor, North Carolina. He enjoyed fishing and served as Chairman of the Land Harbor Fishing Committee. Survivors include his wife Mary Burke Biggar Chalfant; North Augusta, SC; a son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Dorris Biggar, Ladson, SC; two grandsons, Jamie Biggar (Shannon), Goose Creek, SC and Chad Biggar, China; a nephew, Byron Crytzer, North Augusta, SC; a niece Joylynn Crytzer, North Augusta, SC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this Saturday afternoon from 5 until 7.
