AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Henry Tharion Douglas, Sr., 88, husband of the late Mary Ann Douglas, entered into rest on April 17, 2014 at University Hospital. T was one of the last of the greatest generation and beloved by many. Mr. Douglas was a native of Orangeburg,SC. but lived in Augusta most of his life. He graduated from Richmond Academy and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served in WWII and was a veteran of the invasion of Normandy. He returned home, attended Junior College of Augusta, and began his 59 year marriage to Mary Ann. He retired from Dupont Construction after 32 years of service. He served as a deacon at the former Second Baptist Church and was a 50 year member of the John S. Davidson Lodge, F&AM. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann; grandson, Kevin Russell Douglas; brothers, Lawson Elgie Red Douglas and Charles Douglas; and sisters, Vondell Carson, Viviene Debella, and Ann Prescott. Living family members include sons: Henry Tharion Douglas II and wife Gayle of Columbus, Carl Eugene Douglas and wife Karen of Augusta, Phillip Ray Douglas and wife Karen of Augusta; beloved companion, Lillian Smith; brother, Don Grantham; grandchildren: Henry Tharion Douglas III of Columbus, Matthew Carl Douglas of Franklin, KY, Amy Winifred Monaco of Columbus, Amanda Susan Chapman of Columbus, Dr. Mary Ann Douglas Wilkie of Augusta, Dr. Phillip Alexander Douglas of Augusta; and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating. Burial will follow in Westover Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the , 1101 Northchase Pkwy, Suite 1, Marietta, GA 30067.
