AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Sam Warner Syms, 92, of Augusta, Georgia entered into rest Saturday, April 19, 2014 at his home. He was a native of Waynesboro, Georgia and a resident of Augusta, having made Augusta his home for the past 62 years. Sam worked at Medical College of Georgia for 28 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening. He also enjoyed going to sporting events with his sons and his late son-in-law, Wolfgang Langner and late brother, Hugh Syms. He was a World War II Veteran who received two purple hearts during his tour in France. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Jones Syms; sister, Ann L. Wright of Anderson, SC; two daughters, Laurie (the late Wolfgang) Langner of Hephzibah and Martha (Eddie) Moore of Augusta; two sons, Michael (Lynn) Syms of Augusta and William (Cathy) Syms of Grovetown; six granddaughters, Angela Bumgardner, Valerie Charnine, Shona Syms, Ashley Thompson, Christine Seals and Alicia Edison; five grandsons, Jeremy Langner, Cyrus Sipp, Michael Syms, Tanner Syms and Ryan Syms; five great granddaughters, Laurie Langner, Jasmine Landaverde, Mia Thompson, Maya Seals and Alia Edison; six great grandsons, Joseph Langner, Laethon Bumgardner, Ethan Thompson, CJ Landaverde, Christian Bell and Max Charnine; step-granddaughter, Stormee Cato; step-grandson, Jeremee Black; step-great-granddaughter, Kayson Cato; and special nephew, Tom (Linda) Saxon. Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Carrie Bell and James Thomas Syms; two sisters, Claudia Saxon and Mary McLaurin; and five brothers, Harry, Mack, Jim, Hugh and Frank Syms. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 PM Wednesday evening at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road. Funeral Services will be held 3 PM, Thursday, April 24, 2014 in the Mausoleum Chapel of Hillcrest Memorial Park with Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Larry Whaley, Leroy Buck More, Richard Herron, Jeff Ard, Lance Poindextor and Bennie Chavous. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Piney Grove Baptist Church, 5060 Mike Padgett Hwy., Augusta, GA 30906.
