Benjamin Kenneth Smith October 15, 1980 - March 21, 2013 Benjamin Kenneth Smith of Tehachapi, California died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at his home in Tehachapi. Born in Long Beach, California, October 15, 1980 to Marty and Karen Smith, Ben graduated from Tehachapi High School in 1998 and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy from U. C. San Diego as well a teaching credential from Cal State Bakersfield. He completed his student teaching program at Tehachapi High School. Ben joined the U.S. Army Reserve in 2006 and became a Military Police Investigator. He was deployed to Afghanistan in November of 2007 as a part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and returned stateside in December of 2008. Ben was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a devoted reader of a wide variety of books. Cooking great food came naturally to him and he enjoyed making fantastic meals. He was very computer savvy and used his skills to fix and build computers and troubleshoot problems for friends and family, earning him the name "tech support." He enjoyed playing iphone apps with his nephew (especially the Light Saber app) and playing his guitar for him. Ben is survived by his parents, Marty and Karen; sister Jamie and her husband Ned and their two children Rylan and Gianna; his Aunt Jody, her husband Dale and cousins, Tarah, Tracy and Tonya and their families; his Uncle Danny, his wife Marcia and cousins Kristen and her family, Tricia and Nathan. The funeral service will be held at 12:30, April 3, 2013 at Bakersfield National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ben's name to the University of Michigan Depression Center.
