Harry William Smith Obituary
Harry William Smith 1915 - 2013 Harry was born in Ohio on November 26, 1915. As a child he moved with his parents to Michigan where he attended schools. He began his career in music while in high school in Michigan, later playing with the big bands in the '40's. He continued his love for music throughout his life. After completing his education he worked as a test engineer for Stinson Aircraft and General Motors. While at General Motors he was involved in the development of the heart monitor in their Sloane Kettering Division. During this time he also ran his own business, Smith Sound Systems. In 1959 he moved to Southern California and began working as an engineer at Autonetics. He was involved in NASA and in the design of the Apollo. He, once again, had his own business, Smith Electric Motors. In 1968 he resigned from Autonetics to devote full time to his business. In 1981, after he moved to Santa Cruz County, he sold Smith Electric Motors and "retired". He moved to Kernville in 1991. Since then he has been active in the Historical Society, in Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, and in Kernville United Methodist Church. He is a life time member of the Masonic Lodge. His love for music continued -- he was part of the community orchestra when it was first formed. He also played for many years with his group, The Dam Jazz Quartet, at the Senior Center lunches. He and his saxophone will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Gary, who died in Vietnam. He is survived by his son, Tom and wife Fern in Texas; his son, Richard and wife Eleanor in Michigan; his daughter, Nancie and husband Jerry in New Mexico; ten grandchildren: Tom Smith, Dan Wood, Janet Twydell, Kerry Smith, Richie Smith, Kirk Dominic, Angie Thompson, Lien Jones, Gary Dominic, Gia Dominic; and thirteen great grandchildren. Services will be held at Kernville United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 7, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will follow at Kern River Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kernville United Methodist Church or to Hoffmann Hospice. Sierra Valley Mortuary www.bakersfield.com/obits
