Ivan Miller Thor (1922 - 2012)

The Guest Book is expired. Ivan Miller Thor December 25, 1922 - April 25, 2012 Ivan Miller Thor was called into the loving arms of his Savior on April 25, 2012. He has been reunited with his beloved wife Joan. Graveside services will be held for Ivan at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 30, 2012, at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Ivan was born December 25, 1922, in Wayne, Nebraska, to Erik and Anna Thor. Throughout his lifetime, Ivan shared many details of his early years but we were glad to have his thoughtful input on the following specifics: He attended grammar and high school in Stanton, Nebraska, and after graduation the family moved to Audubon, Iowa, where he became involved with his father in farming and cattle businesses. He was very interested in youth programs offered through agricultural extension programs and was awarded a scholarship to Iowa State College for one year. Armed with this experience and his farming background, he was offered a position with the Farm Credit Administration. After several years of working in the Mason City office, he resigned and moved to Los Angeles where he got a position as a lending officer at one of the major banks, later becoming an assistant manager. By chance he met two oil men in Bakersfield and after several meetings was offered the opportunity to move to Bakersfield in a management position, overseeing three separate corporations which were all oil and land oriented. He completed courses necessary to become a certified petroleum landman at the University of Oklahoma and soon after became president and general manager of one oil company and vice president and general manager of a land holding company. He later became the executive vice president and secretary/treasurer and stock transfer agent for Midway Premier oil company. He was a member of Bakersfield Rotary Club for 25 years; also a member of the Petroleum Club, serving in various capacities including president. He married Joan Rose Wade in Bakersfield. They enjoyed over 42 years together, traveling extensively and becoming involved in several local churches. One of Ivan's proudest accomplishments was his role in assisting Joan in raising her son David. Following the death of his beloved Joan in January 2011, Ivan's only grandson Elijah shared his home for a time. He also took great pride in offering his help and the benefit of his many life experiences to Elijah, and they shared a very special relationship. Ivan is survived by his devoted, loving and much loved son Dave and his wife Dee; special, beloved grandson Elijah and his mother Laine; and Elijah's children, Ivan's beloved great- grandchildren including Alexis, with whom he had a strong bond. Ivan was always particularly pleased when Alexis would lay her head next to his and tell him "stories." He missed Joan every day but enjoyed keeping her memory alive with beloved niece Cathy; they spent many happy visits reminiscing. Ivan was a kind man who could best be described as a true gentleman, always generous with his knowledge and resources. He will be missed.
