Jeff Hiroshi Fukawa December 11, 1924 - December 9, 2013 Jeff passed away peacefully on December 9, 2013 as a result of a progressive illness. His family welcomes all who wish to remember and celebrate his life with them to funeral services on Saturday, December 28th 1:30 PM at Delano Mortuary (707 Browning Rd., Delano, CA). Visitation begins at 1:00 PM. Jeff was born on December 11, 1924 in Lompoc, CA. His family settled in the Delano area in 1942, prior to being interned in the Poston, Arizona Relocation facility during WWII. As soon as he was eligible, Jeff volunteered to join the United States Army, where he was honored and proud to have served with both the 442nd Infantry Regiment and the 100th Battalion. Though he was primarily stationed in Italy, Jeff's unit also had posts across Europe. Renowned for his intense work ethic, quiet but easy-going nature, good humor, and loyalty, Jeff was a life-long farmer. He worked as a ranch supervisor for Tony Iafrati for over 50 years, before retiring in 2005. Jeff was very active in Delano's Japanese American Community, JACL, and Buddhist Church. Jeff, who earned a Judo 3rd degree black-belt early in life, helped form the Delano Judo Club, where, for over a decade, he taught Judo to many adults and youth in the community. He was also an avid bowler and greatly enjoyed the team camaraderie and competition during Delano's bowling hey-day. Jeff also enjoyed fishing, even to the extent of enduring debilitating sea-sickness to join a deep-sea fishing excursion. Many will recall his constant companions - his dogs, from his German Shepherds to his beloved Chow-Chows. He just adored his last "babies," Kimi and Akami (the 3-legged miracle) and would often be caught sharing his filet mignon and ice cream with them. Jeff had a great eye for photography. Finding pictures, unseen in over 50 years, his family has a new-found appreciation for his hidden talent. Jeff was predeceased by his loving wife of 45 years, June; and siblings George and Kazuko. He is survived by daughter Toni, her husband Doug, their children Joshua, Micah, and Zane; daughter Joanne and her son, Dane; brother, Koji (Kazumi) and sister, Chieko (Ted Iida). The family would like to express a very special thanks to Mrs. Flo Moreno and her staff at Golden Hearts Residential Care for their exceptional and loving care of Jeff; Cindy, Diana, the staff at Mercy Memorial Hospice, and Dr. Larry Yokoyama for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Go For Broke National Education Center (goforbroke.org) or a
