In the winter of 1942, Roy was drafted into the United States Army. Leaving behind his expectant wife and daughter, he served valiantly in World War II for the next 3 1/2 years. After his basic training in Pearl Harbor, he served most of his war time duties in the Pacific Theatre. He eventually rose to the rank of sergeant and helped to secure victories in major battles including Saipan and Okinawa. Roy was Honorably discharged in the fall of 1945 at the conclusion of the war. In late 1945, Roy and Elnora Crook moved the family from Oklahoma to California. While managing a peach ranch, he continued his education through the G.I. Bill and studied "Diesel Mechanics". This study eventually led Roy to pursue a career as a mechanic with Davies Machinery (Caterpillar) in Bakersfield, CA. He would later serve as a service manager at Davies before buying ACW Land Leveling in Wasco, CA. He would help run the company successfully until his retirement in 1986. Roy was a life long servant of the Lord. He and Elnora were members of Bethel Temple in East Bakersfield and later First Assembly of God and Westside Family Fellowship in Wasco. Many memories of Roy will endure for the Crook Family. All of the children and grandchildren spent many summers at Roy and Elnora's vacation home and property in Springfield, Oregon. There, fishing and rafting on the McKenzie River and eating "Grandpa's" homemade vanilla ice cream were cherished annual traditions. Roy and Elnora also traveled the country in their motor home and spent many winters in Quartzsite, Arizona. For the last five years, Roy and Elnora have resided at Glenwood Gardens in Bakersfield, CA. The Crook family would like to thank all of those that have offered their love and support during this time of loss.
