Charles Pippen Notice

Charles Vaughan Pippen, husband and father, died peacefully on Wednesday of cardiovascular disease at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He recently celebrated his 90th birthday with his family. The son of William V. Pippen Jr. and his wife, Susan Jones Pippen, Vaughan was born in Annapolis in 1924. He graduated from Baltimore's Polytechnic Institute in 1942 and joined the United States Navy. He fought in the South Pacific from 1942 on the Destroyer Escort USS Cabana until the end of WWII. Vaughan and his teenage girlfriend, Virgie Marion Hoffa, married in April, 1945 at Gregory Memorial Baptist Church in Baltimore and their extended family, including great grandchildren, celebrated Vaughan and Virgie's 69th wedding anniversary in April. Professionally, Vaughan was a practicing architect in the Baltimore metropolitan area for 50 years after WWII ended. He attended Johns Hopkins University and originally worked in the architectural office of Cyril Hebrank on Charles Street. Vaughan's career coincided with the creation of his and Virgie's family, their sons "Chuck" and Chris and their daughter Brooke. He was a longtime member of the American Institute of Architects. Vaughan did architectural planning for many local churches, public schools, apartment communities and industrial properties. Vaughan was very involved throughout his entire life with the Baptist Church. He was a longtime member, along with Virgie, of the University Baptist Church next to Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University. There, over the years, he was deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher and director or chairman of various programs. He was a trustee for many years of the Baptist Home of Maryland/Delaware. Vaughan was, from time to time, in leadership positions at the Baltimore Baptist Association and the Maryland Baptist Convention and Maryland representative of the Southern Baptist Convention. Vaughan and Virgie lived for many years in Towson and Timonium with their children but moved to Sarasota, Florida about 12 years ago. Recently, they moved to Annapolis, Maryland to live with their daughter, Brooke, and her husband, Steve. Vaughan is survived by this wife, Virgie, and the rest of his family listed below, who all will miss him immensely. Charles "Chuck" Pippen Jr. and J. Chris Pippen, sons, and Brooke H. Schini, daughter; Courtney B. Pippen, Lindsay M. Craven, Emily S. Cotton and Brittany T. Pippen, granddaughters; Christopher A. Schini and William J. Pippen, grandsons; Benjamin V. Cotton, Joshua M. Cotton, Rylan J. Pippen, Noah J. Cotton and Connor J. Craven, great grandsons. A celebration service of Vaughan's life will be held at College Parkway Baptist Church, Arnold, Maryland on Sunday. Visitation with family will begin at 3pm and the memorial service will be at 4. Online condolences may be made at www.barrancofuneralhome.com
