Permilla Smith Brawley

Notice Condolences



BRAWLEY , Permilla Smith On August 22, 2013, Permilla Smith Brawley, 77, of Baltimore, MD, died after a brief battle with cancer. Permilla or "Millie" as everyone called her was born July 23, 1936 to Harold K. Smith and Olive Hunt Smith and raised in Arcanum, OH. She attended DePauw University for two years before attending Ohio State University and graduating in 1958. She taught elementary school in the Worthington Ohio School District before moving to Baltimore in 1961 where she taught in Baltimore City public and private schools. There were very few human beings on earth that were as kind hearted and caring as Millie Brawley. She loved her family, her friends, and her community dearly and contributed greatly to them all. She served on the Johns Hopkins Women's Board and was President from 1996 to 1999. She was a member of the Guilford Garden Club, the Mt. Vernon Club and the Junior League of Baltimore where she sang for the "Larks". She was a devoted member of St. David's Church of Roland Park where she served on the vestry and was an active volunteer. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert K. Brawley; sons, Robert Hunt Brawley (Sandra Kolankiewicz) and Roland Scott Brawley; daughter Katherine Brawley Hogan (Tad); and grandchildren, Madeleine Ann Brawley, Trevor Reynolds Brawley, Garrett Hogan, Graham Hogan and Gus Hogan.
There will be a memorial service at St. David's Church 4700 Roland Avenue, Saturday, September 28 at 11 am. A reception will follow the ceremony.
