Richard Jay Williams Notice

Richard (Dick) Jay Williams, 84, passed away Oct. 19 at UVA Medical after a fall with injuries comparable to the Christopher Reeve accident. He was born in York, PA to the late Fred and Lestie Williams. In 1967 he married Ruth Wichael Williams who survives. He is also survived by a niece Patricia Couture and her husband David, their children, Gabrielle and Travis of Pasadena, MD. and a nephew Richard Alwood and his two daughters, Ashley and Allison of York, PA. Richard graduated from Gettysburg College where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received a Master's degree from the University of Delaware. He taught at Baldwin Manor and Havre de Grace Elementary Schools, was a teacher/principal at Forest Hill, Jarrettsville and Aberdeen Elementary Schools. As a Supervisor he directed the planning and opening of four new elementary schools, all in Harford County where he met Ruth, the music teacher. In 1968 he was awarded a Mott Internship at Michigan State University and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree. He returned to Maryland where he taught at Towson University until retirement. From there he received two sabbatical leaves which were spent in London. After retirement he volunteered at Genesis Jobs, the Assistance Center of Towson Churches and was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Attorney Grievance Committee. In December of 2011 Dr. and Mrs. Williams retired to Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, VA. There he enjoyed playing bridge and was part of a writing class where he shared articles written about his years in education in Harford County. A memorial service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church, 7308 York Road, Towson, Saturday, November 9 at 2 PM. Memorial gifts may be made to Central Presbyterian Church for the Sundays at Central Concert Series.
