HAYES , Thelma Ruth Person Thelma Ruth Person Hayes, a retired Los Angeles County Parole Officer, died on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Manor Care Arden Gardens in Pikesville, MD. Thelma was born in Mound Bayou, MS, on October 17, 1918, the second child of Ernest Aaron and Mary Hogan Person. While she was an infant, the family moved to Gary, IN, where she grew up. As a teenager, she played violin, and she enjoyed swimming and tennis. In 1936, she graduated from Roosevelt High School. She attended Indiana University for one year, but had to leave in order to take care of her ailing mother. She married Charles Henry Hayes, her high school classmate, on February 24, 1941, in Crown Point, IN. They became members of First Baptist Church. In 1953, Thelma and Charles moved to Los Angeles, CA, with their eleven year old son, Floyd. Shortly thereafter, they joined Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was an avid Bridge player. Thelma worked for a number of years as a secretary in the Los Angeles Public School System until the death of her husband in 1966. She later returned to college and obtained a B.A. degree in social work from California State University, Los Angeles, which was then Los Angeles State University. From 1971 to 1993, Thelma worked for the Los Angeles County Probation Department as a Probation Officer. In the early 1990s, she became a founding member of the First African Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. In February 2010, she came to live with her son and his family in Pikesville, Maryland. She immediately became a member of Union Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Randallstown, Maryland. She remarked quite often how much she loved Union Bethel and Rev. Charles T. Sembly, its pastor. Thelma was predeceased by her husband, Charles (deceased, 1966), and siblings: Eleanor Person Lawe, Celestine Person Galloway, Myrtle Person Brown, and Ernest Aaron Person. She leaves a son, Floyd W. Hayes, III, and her daughter-in-law, Charlene Moore Hayes; four grandchildren: Tracy Lamar Hayes, Keisha Gabrielle Hayes, Ndidi Nkechinyere St. Franc, and Kia-Lillian Nicole Hayes; and three great grandchildren: Alyssa St. Franc, Tristan Hayes, and Tayvin Hayes.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Thelma Hayes Scholarship Fund at the Union Bethel AME Church, 8615 Church Lane, Randallstown, MD 21133.
