SNYDER , Dr. Walter M. On September 7, 2013, Dr. Walter M. Snyder , age 89, passed away. Dr. Snyder, or Walt as most would call him, was a long time resident of Dundalk, although he liked to consider himself as a "Pleasant Pheasant from Pennsylvania," Dr. Snyder was much more than that, as he was very caring and gracious man, generous not only to his family but also to a long line of friends, to his community and many charities. Walter was always quick to send a card, give thanks, help a fellow person, or give someone advice. Throughout his many years, he was a devoted brother and uncle, always remembering birthday, anniversary or other special occasions. Dr. Snyder was born in Montreal, Canada in 1923, at the age of six the family moved to Springdale, PA, where Walter graduated from Springdale High in 1942. After graduation he went to work in a factory in Oakmouth PA making bombs, before being drafted in March 1943 in the United States Army. Walt was attached to the 106th Infantry Division, and after being deployed was captured in December of 1944 by the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge. Freed by Allied forces in March 1945, arrived home safe in June 1945 where he finished out his service in 1946 in Ashville NC. Mr. Snyder after being honorably discharged with 2 bronze stars, 2 purple hearts and several other medals. Walt attended the University of Pittsburg in 1947 and graduated in 1950 earning his Master Degree in Business Education. In September 1950 Walt taught at Dundalk Junior/ Senior High School until 1954. Walt took a leave of absence from teaching to attend Harvard University and in J955 earned his PHd. (Doctorate Degree). Snyder then took the Position as Baltimore's first Director of Personal for the Board of Education until he retired in 1983. Dr. Snyder continued in his retirement, being a gentleman, a caring friend, and had maintained his friendships with his friends and co-workers throughout his life, always making time to meet for lunch or enjoying a phone conversation. Dr. Snyder enjoyed reading, the library was his life, a good book and a diet Pepsi close by his side would be all Wait needed to get though the day. Dr. Snyder is survived by his brother Richard Snyder, and sister Gloria Clark; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family of Dr. Snyder will receive friends at Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk on Thursday 11 AM to 1 PM. A service with Military Honors will be at 1 PM at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Joseph Richey Hospice, Inc. 838 North Eutaw Street, Baltimore, MD, 21222. Dr. Walter Snyder will be cremated and his remains will be laid to rest at Greenwood Memorial Park in New Kensington PA at a later date, alongside his mother Edith Montgomery and his late brother, Harry Snyder and late sister, Lois.
