Donna Jean Barlow

September 11, 1924 to July 3, 2014

Donna Jean Barlow, 89, passed away at North Pointe Woods in Battle Creek on July 3, 2014.  Donna was born on a farm in Montcalm County, Michigan, to John and Ella Anderson.  She graduated from Greenville High School and enrolled in The University of Michigan School of Nursing and joined the Cadet Nurse Corps.  After receiving her diploma she was a hospital staff nurse for four years and then earned her B.S. degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.  She returned to Michigan as a staff nurse at the Van Buren County Health Department for two years and then was appointed as an Instructor at the University of Oklahoma School of Nursing and the Nurse in the Medical School's Comprehensive Medical Care Project.  In 1957 she became a supervisor in the Des Moines County Health Department in Iowa and then earned her Master's degree in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University.  She returned to the University of Oklahoma as an Instructor in the University School of Nursing and Associate Director of Nursing in the Hospital Outpatient Department and later the Nurse coordinator of the Oklahoma Regional Medical Program.  She was an active member and leader in nursing and health service organizations and served as President of the Oklahoma State Nurses Association.  In 1972 she was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing and Director of Nursing in the Medical School's Area Health Education Center in Galveston, Texas.  She continued to be an active member of both health and service organizations and was elected into the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.  In 1986 she retired as an Associate Professor and returned to Michigan.  She was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and volunteered at the Binder Park Zoo, the Charitable Union and at North Pointe Woods, where she lived since 2000.  She enjoyed traveling, sewing, nature and family activities. 

She was preceded in death by her two sisters June E. Gilbert of Battle Creek and Phyllis J. Wright of Novi, MI.  She is survived by her nieces and nephews Karen Lumley and Marie Gilbert of Grand Rapids, Marsha Terry of Battle Creek, Tammy Wright of Holt, MI, Brian Wright of Novi and James D. Gilbert, MD, of Hickory Corners, MI.

Cremation has taken place and private services will be held at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan, MI. Memorials will be graciously received by Binder Park Zoo and North Pointe Woods in Battle Creek.
