Jerry Lee "J.J" Johnson Battle Creek Comedian - Family Man -Marine Jerry Lee Johnson, 70, died Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital. Jerry was born on December 30, 1941, in Quincy, Michigan to LeRoy Johnson of Darlington, SC and Lanetta (Hutchins) Johnson of Quincy, OH. Jerry spent part of his childhood in South Carolina on the Johnson farm and in Kentucky. When he came to Battle Creek he attended Battle Creek Public Schools. His teachers at Battle Creek Central instilled pride of education and revealed hidden talents, leading him to enlist in the Marine Corps shortly before graduating in 1959. Jerry trained as a private at Paris Island and served aboard the U.S.S. Gearing during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He completed his term of service in 1967. Returning to Battle Creek, he worked as a Mechanic. He met Joyce Ann Hoffman, a customer, and fell in love. They were married for 48 years. He attended Lansing Community College, in the GM Apprentice Program. He began working for General Motors Corporation in Lansing as a Machine Repairist Journeyman in 1966. He proudly worked there for 38 years; right up until the last Oldsmobile (The 2004 Alero) came off the assembly line. He took great pride in building Oldsmobiles, especially the V-8 Rocket Engine. Jerry loved hunting, fishing, and football. He loved the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Tigers as well as watching Westerns. He was an avid sportsman, he enjoyed playing pool and bowling with friends at Springfield Tavern. He enjoyed having other people sing Karaoke for him. He was a loving husband and father. He loved his beloved grandchildren, nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. He spoke highly of his late Mother-in-Law Bernice Leone Early. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ann; daughters, Pamela and Tracey (Glenn) Williams of Poplarville, MS; brother, Danny K. Johnson of Bedford Township; sister, Linda Parlier of Mt. Orb, OH; grandchildren, Rita (Ryan), Brandon (Kay), Megan (fiancé Michael); great-grandchildren, Avalynn and David. Family will receive friends at the Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service in Battle Creek, Michigan on the Magnificent Motor Mile on Friday, October 26, 2012 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM. Funeral services will take place at the funeral home at 11AM on Saturday, October 27, 2012 with Pastor Gale Kragt officiating. A private interment of cremated remains will take place at Bedford Township Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project. Dress attire of Blue Jeans is required. Food and refreshments will follow at Lakeview Baptist Church, 7 South 20th St. Battle Creek, MI. Luncheon is provided by staff and friends at Coburn Elementary and Lakeview Baptist Church.
