John D. Ackerman Bellevue John David Ackerman, 87, of Bellevue, died December 7, 2012 at Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. He was born July 24, 1925, the son of Floyd and Evelyn (Middlesworth) Ackerman in Swartz Creek. John served in the U. S. Navy from November 1943 through April 1946 in the Philippines during World War II. He graduated from Navy Diesel Engineering School at Navy Pier in Chicago. He worked for the Grand Trunk Western Railroad for 42 years as an engineer, retiring in 1992. John was preceded in death by his wife, Thin Ackerman in 2010, his parents and sisters, Venius and Shirley. He is survived by his children, Mary Sue (Curt) Hemingway of Culleoka,Tennessee, Brenda Hoffman of Pinconning, Michigan, Carol Ackerman of Crossville, Tennessee, Johnna Boughner of Michigan, Mary Marie (James) Townsend of Battle Creek and David Ackerman of South Carolina; 12 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and sister, Esther Grundy of Ann Arbor. John was a member of American Legion, Post 298, Lodge #12 F & AM, St. Thomas Episcopal Church the Brotherhood of Local Engineers #33. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at Shaw Funeral Home. Services will take place 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with The Rev. Brian R. Coleman officiating. Interment, Fort Custer National Cemetery.
