Joseph J. Bulko Jr. Battle Creek Joseph J. Bulko Jr., 78, died on March 2, 2013 at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek, MI after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was born on March 15, 1934 in Ecorse, MI to Joseph Sr. and Anna Bulko. In high school, he was a member of the rowing team, competing against local and Canadian teams. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 and retired in 1972 as a Chief Petty Officer. In 1964 Naval Air Station Grosse Ile honored him as Man of the Year in recognition of his leadership of the precision rifle team. After retiring from the Navy, he completed his college at Eastern Michigan University, graduating with a BS in Ed. He found his second calling in Vassar, MI where he taught fifth graders for the next 20 years. Students would come up to him years after they graduated with happy memories of their time in his class. He is survived by Patricia, his wife of 56 years; two sons Joseph III (Barbara) and Robert (Peggy); three grandsons Matthew, Michael, and John (Jack); and two sisters Carolyn (Paul) Harris and Kimberly (Scott) McKlesky. The family will hold a memorial service at Fort Custer National Cemetery later in the year. Memorials can be directed to Veterans support organizations and Alzheimer's Disease Research. Joe was a patriot to his country, a loving husband to his wife, a hero to his sons, a teacher to many, and a friend of great humor and grace to all. Thanks Pops! We'll take it from here.
