Marvin Shebel

Marvin Shebel, 86, of Cheboygan, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Hospice House of Cheboygan.

Marv was born September 13, 1926 in Marshall, the son of Earl and Hazel (Marvin) Shebel and raised in Marshall, he attended Albion College and later the University of Michigan after which he pursued a lifelong career in education, starting with a teaching position at Cheboygan Jr. High School. His career continued at Flint Central High School during the 1950s and then back to Cheboygan schools in 1969.  Many locals will remember him as the Cheboygan High School Principal, where he was known to lead a cheer whenever a pep rally was held. He later became Assistant Superintendant and retired from that position.  Later in life he often commented that he had attended enough ball games and participated in enough fund raisers to last a lifetime - he loved every minute of it.  He served in the US Navy in World War II, stationed on a minesweeper in the Pacific. A lifelong love of fishing led him to camping spots near local lakes and rivers from Cheboygan area, to the Upper Peninsula, and into Canada, and of course, a lot of fishing tales resulted. He and Irene lived out of a camper trailer many of their summers, starting in Aloha State Park where he was a seasonal park ranger, to their favorite Canadian destination, Little Wawa Lake at The Shoals campground. As testament to his year-round love of fishing snowmobiles and ice shanties were always close at hand. After Irene's death in 2010, he struggled with his loss, understandable after 61 years of marriage.

His family is eternally grateful to the neighbors and friends he had in Cheboygan and Aloha for everything they did to help during this challenging period. He loved Cheboygan, the people, the adventures, and could tell a positive and uplifting story out of almost any experience. He was quite a story teller, and enjoyed sharing insights and experiences with anyone that would stop for a chat.

He will be dearly missed.

Surviving are his daughter, Gretchen (Watkins), his son-in-law, David, and his two granddaughters, Glynis and Meredith, all of Vallejo, California, along with brother, Alan of Marshall, Michigan. His wife, Irene, and a sister Alice, preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be held sometime later this year. The family requests that donations be made to the Cheboygan Senior Center in lieu of flowers to honor all of the friends and camaraderie Marv enjoyed there over the past few years.
