Battle Creek

Richard L. Porter, 81, of Battle Creek, went to be with the Lord December 23, 2013 at Bronson Battle Creek.  Richard was born December 24, 1931 in Battle Creek to Verlin Porter and Reathel (Rouch) Bogedain.  He attended Battle Creek Public Schools and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954.  He was a volunteer member of the Leroy Township Fire Department and worked for Eaton's in Marshall.

He also worked as a fireman/security at the VA Hospital.

Richard loved to fish and hunt, especially with his two sons.  He also had a special love for his two dogs, Buddy and Angel.  Above all else, Richard loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Richard married the former Donna Smith on December 24, 1955.  She survives.  Also surviving are their children, Debbie (Jim) Hock, Sherry Miles, Tim Porter and Diana (Jeff) Brown; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  Richard was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Jon Porter, a grandson, James B. Hock, a great grandson, Keegan Weldy and a sister, Barbara Hall.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, December 27, 2013 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, where funeral services to celebrate Richard's life will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, December 28.

Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VA Medical Center.  Personal messages for the family may be placed at
