Dec. 16, 1953-Jan. 2, 2014
Gary (G.R.) Mead passed away peacefully on Jan. 2, 2014 after a lengthy illness. While he died relatively young, Gary experienced a richer and more fulfilling life than most people could in twice as many years.
Born on the north shore of Long Island, NY; he grew up in the Huntington/Cold Spring Harbor area. As a teenager, he developed a passion for engine building and drag racing. He studied mechanical technology at community college and worked for Grumman aerospace.
Gary moved to Texas in the mid 70's working for NASA contractors. In 1982 he returned to his passion, the automotive field, eventually opening his own business, Expert Automotive Services, in League City. The business thrived due to Gary's extraordinary mechanical talent and ability combined with his integrity and personal attention to every customer.
Actively involved in his community and government, Gary also had a variety of interests including theater and movie production. He sponsored several car, motorcycle and boat racers and promoted actors, musicians and innovators over the years.
With his vivacious personality and positive attitude, Gary was a loyal friend to many, willing to sacrifice much for others. He inspired and encouraged people to follow their dreams and reach for the stars.
He is survived by his greatest accomplishment, his daughter, Alexandria Mead. His father, Albert R. Mead; mother, June E. Nass; and sister, Deborah J. Mead preceded him in death.
A celebration of life to honor Gary will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014, 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Butler's Longhorn Museum in League City. For more information about the gathering or to offer thoughts, memories and condolences, send an email to garymeadcelebration @gmail.com.
