Karl William Schaefer, Lt. Colonel USAF (ret.), of League City, Texas, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Juanita Schaefer; his four sons, Kurt and wife Sandra, Otto and wife Elizabeth, Eric and wife Kimberly, and Paul and wife Patricia; his eight grandchildren, Katherine Rorie and husband Micah, Caroline, Derek, Audry, Kayla, Claire, Kendall and Jessica Schaefer; and his great-grandson, Benjamin Rorie.
Karl was born on February 9, 1936 in Indianapolis, IN to Otto and Wilhelmina (Lange) Schaefer. He received his mathematics degree from Northern Colorado University. In Colorado, he met and married Juanita Geer and enlisted in the Air Force. From 1967-1968, he served a tour of duty in Vietnam piloting C-123's. His service took his family to New York, Kansas, Illinois, Florida and Texas. In 1969, he moved the family to League City and began a career at NASA, retiring in 1995.
Karl was a true patriot who loved his country and reminiscing about his piloting days in the Air Force. Throughout his life he had many interests, including golfing, and music, particularly barbershop quartets. Upon retirement, his passionate hobby was woodworking, spending countless hours planning his projects and searching for that perfect piece of wood. Karl enjoyed golfing and social activities for many years as a member of Bay Oaks Country Club. He was also a devoted member of Webster Presbyterian Church. He will be remembered as someone who spoke proudly and eloquently about his family, country, faith and flying.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Webster Presbyterian Church, 201 West NASA Road 1, Webster, TX 77598. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to Wounded Warrior Project or a similar military organization.
