Dorothy Leah Roberts Griner, 89, died peacefully early Thursday morning, June 5, 2014 and went to be with her Lord. Born in Voth, Texas on November 10, 1924, she lived in Call, Texas during the early years of her life. She graduated from Beaumont High School in 1942 and from the University of Texas in Austin in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. After graduating from the University of Texas, she married James Griner, Jr. on July 7, 1946 after he returned from the service in the U. S. Army during World War II. James and Dorothy owned Griner Funeral Home in Newton, Texas from 1954 until 1980. After living in Kirbyville, Texas for a few years, she and James moved to Newton to live ther the rest of their lives. Dorothy was a retired elementary school teacher who taught in the Kirbyville and Newton schools for many years and was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing immensely and painting as hobbies. Her two children survive her, Jim Griner, living in Alvin, Texas, Lee Cochran, daughter and son-in-law, Dee Cochran, living in Fulshear, Texas. Grandchildren are Josh Cochran, Magnolia, Texas, Adam Cochran, New York City, New York and Matt Cochran, Houston, Texas and great granddaughter, Sloane Jolee Cochran and Sloane's mother, Emily Hudnall, Magnolia, Texas. Other survivors are nieces and cousins. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lela Roberts, sister, Frances Mattison and husband, James Griner, Jr. Hook'em Horns!! Smith Funeral Home will hold the funeral at 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with burial following at the Newton City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Methodist Church in Newton, Texas. Visitation will be on Saturday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at smith Funeral Hlme in Newton.
