Hazel Rae Choate Scruggs was born April 24th 1929 in Cameron, TX to Frank Lewis Choate and Eloise Terry Choate. She grew up in Silsbee, TX and graduated from Silsbee High School. Hazel attended Baylor University where she graduated with a BBA degree. She later got a Master's degree from the University of Houston. She married Tommie Joe Scruggs and settled down in Texas City where she taught business classes at Texas City High School for many years. After retiring as a school teacher, she and Tom moved to Silsbee in 1985 and remained active for many years. Hazel was a dedicated member of the Silsbee Women's Club for 27 years. She served as District Treasurer for two years and Club President for two terms. In 1992, she received the coveted Magnolia District Outstanding Club Woman Volunteer Award. Hazel served as President of the Literary Club one term and hosted many meetings in her home. She belonged to the Volunteer Christian Care Center and served as president two years. In her spare time, she loved playing bridge with her friends and hosted many bridge tournaments in her home. Although Hazel didn't play golf, she enjoyed traveling with her husband and riding with him when he played in tournaments. Mrs. Scruggs was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Eloise Choate and her beloved husband Tom. She is survived by her son Jefferson Frank Scruggs and his wife, Kathy of Beaumont. Funeral services for Mrs. Scruggs will be 10:00 am Friday, June 21, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Silsbee with interment following in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Beaumont. Visitation will be from 5 pm until 7 pm Thursday at Farmer Funeral Home.
