F. Wayne Graves, Sr., 86, of Moneta, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013 at Woodhaven Nursing Home following a long illness. Wayne was born in Huddleston Oct. 31, 1927. He was the son of the late Ovid R. and Annie Adams Graves. Wayne was graduated from Huddleston High School, attended Emory and Henry College for three years then transferred to the Pharmacy School in Richmond. Wayne served in the US Army during the Korean War and was in business for 55 years. He was the owner of Buchanan Hardware, F. Wayne Graves Oil Company, and Happy Food Mart. Wayne was a member of Buchanan Baptist Church, Buchanan Moose Lodge, American Legion, charter member and past-president of Lions Club, zone chairman of International Lions Club of America District 24E, served on the draft board of Botetourt County during the Viet Nam War, served as jury commissioner in Botetourt County, was a member of and served on the board of directors of the Botetourt County Chamber of Commerce. He served as mayor of Buchanan and served on Buchanan town council. Wayne served on the Bank of Botetourt Board of Directors for 32 years and served as chairman of the board for 21 years. He was past fire chief of Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department and served on the fire department for 40 years. Wayne served as a president of the Buchanan Elementary School PTA, was a past member of Waterfront Country Club, and was a charter member of Botetourt Country Club. Wayne was active for many years in the Buchanan 4th of July Week Fair and was a member of the Virginia Hardware Association and Virginia Petroleum Jobber Association. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Julia Hollyfield Graves; son and daughter-in-law F. Wayne and Sharon Graves, Jr. of Buchanan; daughter and son-in-law Pamela and Paul Haskins of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Jessica Graves, Nathaniel Graves, Joshua Graves, Emily Armentrout, Jackson and Maddox Haskins; great-grandchildren, Payton Jackson and Olivia Graves; brother C.P. Graves of Huddleston, VA; sister Patsy Melton of Bedford; many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Woodhaven Nursing Home for all of the care and compassion that they showed Wayne. A memorial service honoring Wayneâ€™s life was held at 1 PM, Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville with Reverend Carter Sloan officiating.
