Benjamin Edmond Ward, 79, of Granite City, Ill., born Oct. 25, 1933, in St. Louis, Mo., passed away at 6:24 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Gateway Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Ward retired in April 1999 from Big River Zinc after 27 years of dedicated service as a maintenance mechanic. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict with the United States Marine Corp. He was a dedicated and faithful member of Granite City Masonic Triple Lodge 835 where he had served as an Honorary Past Master and was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Southern Illinois and York Rite Shrine. He enjoyed his days of bargaining at the pawnshops and visiting Goodwill which he called the library. He had a fascination for gadgets and electronics and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Avery and Marie, nee Walker, Ward; two sisters, Carol Hauser and Doris Burkhead; and two brothers, James and Rex Ward.
Surviving are his wife of 58 cherished years, Donna R., nee Day, Ward, whom he married on Sept. 3, 1955, at Winstanley Baptist Church in East St. Louis, Ill.; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Aloysius Petru of Rolla, Mo.; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen D. and Kathleen Ward of Staunton; five grandchildren and their spouses, AJ and Julie Petru and Sarah and Robert Eads of Rolla and Eli, Nathaniel and Zachary Ward of Staunton; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Charles Hahne of Creve Coeur, Mo.; two brothers-in-law, Bill Hauser of Arizona and Ralph Day of Florida; a sister-in-law, Jeannie Ward of Springfield, Ill.; and other extended family and friends.

Visitation: Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill., with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.
Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at the funeral home with Rev. Tom Hufty officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, Ill.
