Bernard "Bernie" F. Rowan, 78, of Lebanon, Ill., born Oct. 28, 1934, in Union Hill, Ill., died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at his residence, with his family at his side.
Mr. Rowan spent 32 years on the Fairview Fire Department. After joining the fire department, Bernie quickly moved up the ranks, and was elected volunteer fire chief in 1973. As Fairview Heights grew, the need for full-time firefighters grew, and he was appointed full-time paid chief in 1978. He was awarded "Fairview Heights Citizen of the Year" in 1976. Bernie's other love was hunting, and he started the Ho-Ro Hunting Club. Hunting trips, family barbecues, and friends made through the fire department all brought joy to Bernie's life. He was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Catherine, nee Mohrman, Rowan; a brother, William (Melba) Rowan; a sister, Rosemary (John) Price; and a brother-in-law, Paul Kasmarzik.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Karen J., nee Randle, Rowan, whom he married on Aug. 23, 1956; two daughters, Tracy L. Rowan, and Kristen L. (Thomas) Myatt; three grandchildren, Emily, Lindsay, and Ryan Myatt; a brother, Robert (Margaret) Rowan; a sister, Marge Kasmarzik; a brother-in-law, Terry (Carol) Randle; and numerous nieces and nephews.
