Charles Mitchell

Charles "Jack" Mitchell, 83, of Granite City, Ill., born Sept. 17, 1930, in Madison, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Mitchell gave over 40 years to Granite City Steel retiring in 1987 as a manager. He proudly served his country in the United States Marines during the Korean War and was a member of the Granite City Elks Lodge 1063. In his free time he enjoyed following NASCAR and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. His greatest love was spending time with his family and he will be remembered for the many special times shared together.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Beulah, nee Scott, Mitchell Mount; and his brothers, Conrad Lee Mitchell and Bob Mitchell.

He is survived by and will be missed by his wife, Bonnie, nee Dickerson, Mitchell, whom he married on Jan. 7, 1978; son, Tom and (Jacque) Mitchell of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughters, Sue and (Gary) Cope of Collinsville, Ill., Lisa Gaudette of Granite City, and Rita Cann of Granite City; grandchildren, Whitney, Scott, Kris, Jessica, Josh, Casey, Raymond, Justin, and Josh; great-grandchildren, Brad, Elliot, Oliver, Zoeann, Allison, Sydney, Mya, Miles, Collin, and Kaylee; sisters, Frances Mitchell of Dallas, Texas, and Linda Sartin of Springfield, Ill.; sister-in-law, Pat Mitchell of Wood River, Ill.; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warriors Project or Central Illinois Honor Flight.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill.

Funeral: In celebration of his life services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at the funeral home with Pastor Randy Vollmar officiating. United States Marine Corp military honors will be rendered after the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Ill.
