Don Bickline

Don R. Bickline, 83, of Highland, Ill., born May 22, 1930, in Highland, Ill., died at 1:43 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at his residence.

Don was reared in the Marine/Highland area, attending Marine School and graduating from Highland High School in 1948. He worked in the oil fields in the Marine area, later entered the U.S. Air Force and served from 1951 to 1955 with duty in Korea during the Korean War. After his military service he worked for Shell Oil Co., Wood River, Ill., Granite City Army Depot, then for the U.S. Postal Service, as a postal carrier in Collinsville, retiring after 31 years in July of 1988. He and his wife had a dried flower business for 10 years and made retro aprons together for the last five years. He enjoyed NASCAR Racing and St. Louis Cardinals Baseball.

Don was a member of the VFW Post 5694, Highland, Ill., a member of Postal Carriers Union 155, former member of Labors Local 687 of Marine and former member of Highland-Pierron Fire Dept. (26 years).

He was preceded in death by his parents, George H. and Mildred A. "Mil", nee Lampe, Bickline.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth E., nee Espenschied, Bickline, whom he married on Sept. 22, 1956, at E&R Church in Marine, Ill.; three children, Michael R. (Kim) Bickline of Highland, Ill., Brian L. (Susan) Bickline of Highland, Ill., and Barbara A. (Jeff) Kimberlin of Rochester, Ill.; his sister, Beverly Maxine (Clifford) Homeier of Livingston, Ill.; and six grandchildren, Paul M. Bickline (significant other, Audra Gall) of Highland, Ill., Jacob R. Bickline of Highland, Ill., Julie C. Bickline of Mesa Ariz., Troy C. Kimberlin of Honolulu, Hawaii, Victor R. Kimberlin of Ottawa, Ill., and Zachary B. Bickline (fiancee, Ciara Miller) of Mount Carmel, Ill.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, Ill., and 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Evangelical United Church of Christ with Rev. Christopher W. Hill officiating. Interment will be at Highland City Cemetery, Highland, Ill.
