James Powell

James Clifford "Jimmy" Powell, 93, of Red Bud, Ill., born Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1920, in East St. Louis, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at Red Bud Regional Hospital in Red Bud, Ill.

James was a Korean War and World War II Army veteran, a 50 year member of Laborers Local 100, former member of the Masonic Order and a member of Grace Church. He had a lengthy career that included being a police officer and laborer, working for Illinois Driver Services Facility and finally he worked as a security guard for both Cahokia Downs and Fairmont Park Racetracks.

James lived life to the fullest, was loved dearly by all who knew him and will be sadly missed.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice, nee Wolfe, Powell; wife, Mozella Powell; parents, James I. and Elizabeth, nee Ripa, Powell; brothers, Ivan Powell and Clyde Powell; and sisters, Nevada Abeln and Joy Sweeney.

Surviving are his children, Karen (Wayne) Bach, James C. Powell, II, and Margaret "Peggy" Morris; nephews, Roger "Mike" (Jill) Sweeney of Red Bud, Ill., Ed (Carolyn) Powell, Bobby (Nancy) Abeln, and Denny (Mary Ann) Abeln; nieces, Sandy, nee Sweeney, Utz, Sharon, nee Sweeney, (Rich) Enskat and (special friend, Ron Arpin) and Joyce, nee Abeln, (Fred) Bush; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation: Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Kurrus Funeral Home in Belleville, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Kurrus Funeral Home, with Dr. Phillip Silsby officiating. Interment will follow at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, Ill.
