Joseph Grobelnik

Joseph A. Grobelnik, 83, of Granite City, Ill., born June 11, 1931, in St. Louis, Mo., passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Gateway Regional Medical Center, Granite City, Ill.

Joe was a proud veteran who served in the United States Navy from 1947 until 1951. He then served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1953 earning a Korean service medal with two bronze service stars and a United Nations Service Medal. On July 9, 1983, Joe married Carol Fisher Williams, the love of his life in Madison, Ill. Joe was of the Catholic faith and had worked as a clerk for Brown Shoe Company in St. Louis, Mo., for many years. He was a member of Teamsters Local 688, Amvets Madison Post 204, D.A.V. Illinois Chapter 53, American Legion Post 113, VFW Post 1300, Senior Circle, Better Breathers at Gateway Regional Medical Center, and a mason with Masonic Lodge 877. Joe enjoyed traveling, eating out and golfing in his younger years. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lena, nee Weise, Grobelnik; and a grandchild, Zain Bennet.

Surviving are his loving wife, Carol Grobelnik of Granite City, Ill.; stepchildren, David (Vera) Williams of Granite City, Ill., Kelly (Dennis) Burns of Granite City, Ill., and Linda (Bill) Riley of Portland, Maine; grandchildren, Ryan Bradford (Jessica) Cordiner, Joseph (Wendy) Coy, Alan (Stephanie) Williams, Katie Williams, David (Kelsey Raynor) Williams, Adam Moore and Amanda (Charles Vaughn) Moore; great-grandchildren, Kurt Cordiner, Montana Coy, Maggie Coy, Clint Williams, Dylan Williams, Savannah Gold, Myley Gold, Ava Moore and Caylee Vaughn.

Visitation: A memorial gathering will be held from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, Ill.

Funeral: In celebration of Joe's life, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Irwin Chapel, Granite City, Ill., with Rev. Charles West officiating. Military rites will be held after the memorial service concludes.
