Kenneth Brennecke

Kenneth W. Brennecke, 89, of Litchfield, Ill., formerly of Cahokia, Ill., born May 1, 1924, in Irondale, Mo., died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital, Litchfield, Ill. He would have been 90 years old on his next birthday.

Mr. Brennecke was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He worked for 40 plus years for Missouri Pacific Railroad in St. Louis. He was active at Bethel United Church of Christ, in Cahokia, where he was a charter member. He lived in St. Louis and Irondale, Mo., before settling in Cahokia, Ill., where he lived for 50 years. He moved to Litchfield, Ill., in 2010. Mr. Brennecke was a self made artist, enjoying carving and painting hobbies. He also enjoyed bowling and golfing, and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, beginning as a child watching from the Knothole Gang up to the present 2013 National League Champion St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. He was a gentle loving man who made friends wherever he went. He will be greatly missed.

He was the son of the late Henry and Margaret, nee Woodrow, Brennecke and was also preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Hattie Ruth, nee Province, Brennecke and three siblings, Edward Brennecke, Donald (Ruth) Brennecke, and Lois (Al) Van Wey.

Surviving are his brother, James (Alberta) Brennecke; two daughters, Carrol (Ken) Wood of Roanoke, Va., and Denise DeMoulin of Litchfield, Ill.; two grandchildren, Erin (Doug) Stratton and Jeff (Lauren) Wood; and two great-grandchildren, Liam Stratton and Joanna Wood; cousin, Allan (Dot) Brennecke; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.


Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2014, at the Braun Colonial Funeral Home, Cahokia, Ill., and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Bethel United Church of Christ, Cahokia, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the church with Pastor Carol Shanks officiating. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
