Louis Bynum

Louis R. Bynum, 87, of Pontoon Beach, Ill., passed away on Dec. 30, 2013, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Ill. Louis was born on July 31, 1926, in Parsons, Tenn.

Louis was the long time warranty administrator for Cummings Diesel in St. Louis, Mo., and worked many years on the Mississippi River as a tugboat pilot. Louis proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Pontoon Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, a greeter and the church custodian. In his free time, Louis enjoyed woodworking, crossword puzzles, playing scrabble, reading mystery novels and reading his bible. He will be remembered for the love he shared with his family and the many good times spent together.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Golden, nee Taylor, Bynum.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 70 years, Vivian, nee Scheland, Bynum; six children, Joyce (Charlie) Bynum-Twente of Warsaw, Mo., Jimmy (Shirley) Bynum of Waxahachie, Texas, Richard (Mary Ann) Bynum of Waterloo, Ill., Brenda (Marvin) Pinion of Paragould, Ark., Terry (Roxanne) Bynum of Swansea, Ill., Rev. William "Will" (Susan) Bynum of West York, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Pontoon Baptist Church, 4000 Highway 111, Pontoon Beach, Ill.

Visitation: Friends may call in celebration of his life from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill.

Funeral: Service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at the funeral home with Pastor Harold Hughes and Pastor Carl Watkins officiating. Burial will follow with full military rites at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo.
