Margaret Woodrome

Margaret A. Woodrome, nee Owens, 92, of Belleville, lll., born June 23, 1921, in Tilden, Ill., died Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Mar-Ka Community Care Center, Mascoutah, Ill.

Margaret began her working career at Kresge's in Belleville, Ill. She then worked for the Carroll House Department Store in Belleville, Ill., for 25 years and had been promoted to credit manager when they closed. Her next job was as manager of Montgomery Ward in Collinsville, Ill., and she was later transferred to the Belleville store until they closed four years later. Margaret received several awards during that time for "recognition of superior achievement". She also worked for Century 21 Battoe Realtors.

Margaret was a member of Glad Tidings Church, now called Life Church, a 40-year member of Beta Sigma Phi, and a 40-year member of Rebekah Lodge 415, Belleville, Ill. She was a longtime member of the Zonta Club, the Women of the Moose Chapter 53, and the Belleville Chapter of the American Business Women's Association, where she was chosen "Woman of the Year" in 1966. She was also a member of the Women's Division of the Belleville Chamber of Commerce, where she served as the general chairman of their 14th Annual Clean Up, Paint Up, Fix Up Campaign.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Harold E. Woodrome, whom she married June 9, 1940, and who died March 28, 2005; twin daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Mary Ann; her parents, Walter A. and Elizabeth, nee Grafton, Owens; a brother, Walter Lee Owens; two sisters, Mary Shellenberger and Dolores Scruggs; and a granddaughter, Toni Buss.

Surviving are a daughter and two sons, Tama (Paul) Allard, John Woodrome, and Gary (Anne) Woodrome, all of Belleville, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Angela (David) Nelson, Christine Buss, Stacey (Matt) Wathen, Christopher (Nichole) Woodrome, Jennifer Woodrome, Brandon (Lisa) Woodrome, Elizabeth Mooney, and Amy (Michael) Smothers; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Viola (Michael) D'Auria of King of Prussia, Pa.; and nieces and nephews.

The Woodrome family would like to offer special thanks to the staffs at Mar-Ka Care Center and Hospice of Southern Illinois for their loving care of Margaret.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Life Church, Swansea, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Life Church, Swansea, Ill., with Pastor Michael Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, Ill.
