Raymond Lauf

Raymond C. Lauf, 85, of Belleville, Ill., born August 9, 1928, in Belleville, Ill., passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at St. Paul's Home, Belleville, Ill.

Mr. Lauf was a railroad engineer for Alton & Southern Railroad for 31 years, retiring in 1991. He was active in both St. Peter's Cathedral Parish and St. Henry's Parish in Belleville, Ill. He was a member of Belleville-Swansea Moose Lodge 1221, the Southside Improvement Association, and the Belleville Senior Citizens. An avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, Ray was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice, nee Schmittling, Lauf, whom he married on June 14, 1950, at St. Peter's Cathedral, and who passed away Oct. 24, 1994; a son, Thomas Lauf; and his parents, Herman G. and Christine, nee Verges, Lauf.

Ray found special joy in the second half of his life with his current wife, Marilyn, nee LaCroix, Neuner, whom he married on Feb. 15, 1997, at St. Henry's Church in Belleville, Ill.

Surviving are three sons and their families, John (Jackie) Lauf, Donald (Debra) Lauf, and Tim (Jody) Lauf; and his daughter-in-law, Debbie Lauf.

He also welcomed into his life and his heart Marilyn's children, David Neuner, Donna (Rick) Dockins, and Beth (Patrick) Blechle.

Also surviving are his sister, Evelyn Schaefer of Alabama; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jean Schwartz, Paul and Clarita Schmittling, Raymond Schmittling, Cletus Schmittling, Robert Knee, Judy and Bob Bitters, and Frank LaCroix.

Ray was blessed with 22 grandchildren, Joshua (Tara) Lauf, Jaime (Scott) Keck, Jennifer (Collin) Largent, Justin (Kim) Lauf, D.J. (Lori) Lauf, Dustin Lauf, Kristina, Katlyn, and Kinsey Lauf, Kayce (Mark) Beatty, Valerie (Will) Bowen, Ashley and Britney Lauf, Carrie and Eric DeFosset, Evan and Morganne Blechle, Cassidy, Erik, and Trever Dockins, Catlin (Darrell) Elisaia, and Brandy Neuner; and 10 great-grandchildren, Oliver, Taylor, Jayda, Lydia, Olivia, Ayden, Alex, Mason, Kailey, and Everleigh.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Henry's with Rev. Kenneth York officiating. Private family burial will be held at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, Ill., at a later date.
