Richard E. Gundlach, D.D.S., 80, of Belleville, Ill., born Sept. 3, 1933, in Belleville, Ill., died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill.
After serving as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Gundlach practiced dentistry in Belleville, Ill., for 40 years. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., the Men of St. Joseph at St. Augustine Catholic Church, the Cenacle of Divine Mercy, the Third Order of St. Francis, a Vandalia prayer group, and a Pana prayer group.
He was a past member of the Wet Birds Social Club, the Rotary Club, and St. Clair Country Club, and had served as president of the Lions Club. Richard was a member of the Bonzi Boys Ski Club, the Belleville Health & Sports Club and the Malibu Shores Condominium Association at the Lake of the Ozarks. He enjoyed water-skiing, snow-skiing, boats, motorcycles, airplanes, music and playing golf.
Dr. Gundlach was preceded in death by two sons, Brian Richard Gundlach and Terence Andrew Gundlach; his parents, Beno J. and Anna E., nee Theiss, Gundlach; a brother, John (Catherine) Gundlach; and a nephew, Karl Gundlach.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Patricia B., nee Barr, Gundlach, whom he married on Aug. 22, 1959, in West Frankfort, Ill.; two daughters, Nancy (William E. III) Miller of Alton, Ill., and Denise (John William Jr.) Wottowa of Columbia, Ill.; and four grandchildren, William E. Miller IV, Mary Patricia Miller, Jack Richard Wottowa, and Margo Barr Wottowa.

Visitation: Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 8707 West Main St., Belleville, Ill. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Thursday followed by a Third Order of St. Francis prayer service.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Father Matthew Elie, Monsignor William McGhee, and Father Stanley Konieczny concelebrating. Burial will follow at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, Ill.
