Thelma "Clo" Scharf

Thelma Clorece "Clo" Scharf, 95, of Fairview Heights, Ill., born Nov. 25, 1918, in East St. Louis, Ill., passed away peacefully in her sleep, Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center, Swansea, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, William Scharf; parents, William and Dora, nee Yeager, Rose; five brothers, Dwight "Bud", Richard, Oscar, Reigh "Buck", and Wendell Rose; and seven brothers-in-law and six sisters-in-law.

Surviving are five children, Alan (Carol), Robert (Sharlene), James (Laura), and Deborah Scharf, and Pamela (Mark) McAdams; three sisters, Mildred Voss, Virginia Miller, and Gloria Burckhardt; two brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Clo and Bill were married on May 20, 1944, in East St. Louis, Ill., and they raised their children in Granite City, Ill. Then Clo went to work in a gasket factory in Kirkwood, Mo. Most Saturdays, she could be found at the mall. Two evenings a week, she bowled at Panorama Lanes, having taken lessons from Leona Spehn. In 1990, she and Bill moved to Belleville, Ill., and joined the Belleville-Swansea Moose Club. They went to dances there every Saturday night and occasionally won the Halloween costume contests. Clo became famous for her holiday-themed parties where she served fabulous home-made desserts. She and Bill traveled the world, often with friends or family. After Bill passed away, her daughter Debbie became her traveling companion. The two of them enjoyed taking day trips with friends. Clo and Debbie especially enjoyed attending the St. Louis Symphony on Friday evenings. She will be greatly missed by family and friends for her wit and hospitality. She will be especially missed by her companion and caretaker, Doreen Douglas.

The family wishes to thank Doreen and the entire staff of Rosewood Care Center, Swansea, Ill., for the excellent care they gave to Clo.

Funeral: A memorial service for Clo will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Holy Trinity Church, Fairview Heights, Ill., followed by a luncheon at Jack's on the Green at Stonewolf Country Club, Fairview Heights, Ill.
