Virgil Vollmer

Virgil "Gene" Vollmer, 84, of Millstadt, Ill., born in Belleville, Ill., passed away Monday, April 28, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center in Swansea, Ill.

Gene was a mechanic who, along with his wife Martha, opened Vollmer's Garage in 1952, retiring in 2010 after 58 years in business. Gene served as a member of the board of directors of the First National Bank of Millstadt for many years, also he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Millstadt Commercial Club, a former member of the Millstadt Sportsman's Club, a former volunteer fireman, and a proud sponsor of Vollmer's Softball Team for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life and his life-long partner, Martha, nee Schwab, Vollmer, whom he married on Nov. 9, 1949, at St. James Church in Millstadt, Ill.; parents, William and Mayme Vollmer; granddaughter, Madison Vollmer; and his siblings, William (Eleanora) Vollmer and Virginia (Clarence) Briesacher.

Surviving are his children, Dan (Tammie) Vollmer of Millstadt, Ill., Tom Vollmer of Belleville, Ill., Marsha (Hank) Glaenzer of Millstadt, Ill., and Sharon (Jim) Range of Millstadt, Ill.; grandchildren, Dan Glaenzer, Jason (Stacey) Glaenzer, Toni Glaenzer, Austin Vollmer, Landan Vollmer, Lyndsey (Ryan) Mehrtens, and Brooke Range; great-grandchildren, Molly Mehrtens, Reese Mehrtens, Waylon Glaenzer, Cashton Glaenzer and Easton Glaenzer; and nieces, nephews and many friends.

The family requests that all donations be made to St. James Church and the Millstadt Senior Center and will be received at the funeral home.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014, and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at the Creason Funeral Home, Millstadt, Ill. A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. and a walk through by the Millstadt Fire Department at 6:45 p.m. both on Thursday.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at St James Catholic Church, Millstadt, Ill., with Monsignor Marvin Volk officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Evergreen Cemetery, Millstadt, Ill.
