William Tweedy

William Oliver Tweedy, 88, of Belleville, Ill., born Saturday, Oct. 31, 1925, in East St. Louis, Ill., died Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Ill.

William worked as a signal maintainer for Alton RR, Southern RR, and Illinois Central RR. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Belleville Ill. He entered into the U.S. Army in 1942 at age 16 serving in World War II and involved in combat in Siapan, Tinian, Okinawa, Philippines, Leyte, IE Shima, including the occupation of Japan. He left active duty in 1952 and enlisted in the Army National Guard from 1954 to 1970 retiring as first sergeant. He was a member of VFW Post 1117 of Caseyville, charter member of the World War II memorial, the usher team at Peace Lutheran Church and greeter at the church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Mae, nee Gasaway, Tweedy; son, David L. Tweedy; parents, Harry A. and Helen L., nee Henson, Tweedy; brother, James F. Tweedy; sisters, Dorothy Qualls and Martha Dickhans; brothers-in-law, John Shalenko, Robert Dickhans and Lawrence Warren; and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Tweedy, JoAnn Tweedy and Louise Warren.

Surviving are his son, William R. (Gina) Tweedy of Perryville, Mo.; brother, Robert L. Tweedy of Belleville, Ill.; sister, Helen Shalenko of Belleville, Ill.; grandchildren, Ryan (Diane) Tweedy, Marcos Tweedy and Britni Tweedy and a sister-in-law, Margaret Moore of Collinsville, Ill.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, August 3, 2014, at Kurrus Funeral Home in Belleville, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m., Monday, August 4, 2014, at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Pierce officiating. Interment will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
