Anita Sasnett McCullough passed away suddenly and peacefully surrounded by her family of a heart condition on Feb. 12, 2014 in her apartment at Wesley Terrace, Des Moines, WA. Anita was born on October 14, 1919 to Rev. & Mrs. J. Randolph Sasnett in Seattle, WA. Her parents had come to the Pacific Northwest from Kentucky and Georgia as newlyweds to serve Methodist churches in Washington including Blanchard, Edison, First United Methodist Church in Seattle and Wesley House at the University of Washington. Anita graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle and attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Anita moved to Bellingham as a bride after she married Charles N. McCullough of Edison, WA on August 3, 1941. They shared a gentle, devoted and loving partnership until his passing May 30, 1996. She loved living in Bellingham and supported her community through the years, rolling bandages for the local Red Cross during World War II, being a Cub Scout Den Mother, being honored with a lifetime membership in the Washington State Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and serving in many capacities at Garden St. United Methodist Church including twenty three years as wedding hostess. Anita and Chuck joined the Mt. Baker Hiking Club in 1943. She was honored with a lifetime membership and was proud to say she was the oldest living member. She hiked in the North Cascades delighting in their majesty and wildflowers well into her eighties. Anita is survived by her beloved brother J. Randolph Sasnett of Bellingham and her three children, Beverlee McCullough of Vashon Island, WA, Charles R. McCullough and wife Susan of Normandy Park, WA. and Mary Kathleen McCullough of West Seattle, four grandchildren, Tanji Lee Gosch Parkinson (Roger), Grant Gosch (Sarah), Wesley McCullough (Mayanka) and Jeff McCullough and seven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by three beloved sisters: Lenora Harris Sasnett Holland (Robert), Anna Ruth Sasnett Heytvelt (Louis) and her twin sister, Evelyn Millspaugh (Richard). Anita served as an important "connector" for her extended family which includes thirteen nieces and nephews, cousins and their children. In addition to her brother, Randy, her Bellingham family includes Dr. Kelly (Kristen) McCullough, Chris (Emily) Sasnett, Dr. Roger (Kathleen) Sasnett, Charles Fretz and Bonnie Jean (Dennis) Lancaster as well as her family of friends and former neighbors. Her passions in life were her immediate and extended family, friends, her faith and Church, hiking in the Northwest, travelling the world and thinking of others. Known for her gracious, calm and caring demeanor, she will be deeply missed by her extended family, and acquaintances and dear friends at Wesley Terrace. Memorial Services celebrating Anita's life will be held at 2 PM on Sat. March 1, 2014 at Garden Street United Methodist Church and at 3 PM on Sunday March 2, 2014 at Wesley Terrace. Interment will take place in the family plot at the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Garden St. United Methodist Church in Bellingham, WA. the Circle of Concern at Wesley Terrace in Des Moines, WA or to the . She will always be a part of the fabric of our lives.
