Dorothy Hughes Myhre, of Birch Bay, passed away Tues., Dec. 10, 2013, in Bellingham. She was born Dec. 14, 1917, in Ferndale, the daughter of H. L. "Bud" and Doy (Slater) Hughes. She was the great-granddaughter of Whatcom Co. pioneers, George and Elizabeth Slater. Dorothy graduated from Ferndale HS in 1935, and attended the U.W., where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She and R. J. "Dick" Myhre were married May 28, 1949, and raised their 4 children in Edmonds. Dorothy became the first paid Director of Volunteers of Stevens Memorial Hospital, Edmonds, in 1964, retiring in 1984. Dorothy was a member of the Blaine Chapter J PEO, and of the Daughers of Pioneers, Whatcom Chapter. Dorothy is survived by her husband Dick, and children Craig Knowlton (Sheryl) of Edgewood, Keith Knowlton (Julie) of Kirkland, Doy Groenenberg (Cal) of Yakima, and Rich Myhre (Joyce) of Edmonds. She also leaves 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandson. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Ferndale. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Sat. Dec. 21st at the Garden St. Methodist Church, Bellingham. Memorials may be made in Dorothy's memory to the Whatcom Hospice Foundation, 2901 Squalicum Parkway, Bellingham, 98225-1851.
