Larry Michael Bovenkamp, age 59 of Lynden, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 7th. Referred to as "Mike" by his family, he was known to many as Bov or Bovie. The son of Anthony "Shorty" and Hilda "Gretta" (Leenders) Bovenkamp, he was born in Bellingham on February 28th 1954. He attended Lynden High School, then joined the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served his country for 8 years. An avid sports fan, he was particularly loyal to the UW Huskies, and of course, the Lynden High School Lions, where fellow fans were well aware of his passion and enthusiasm. His loyalty and generosity were his greatest strengths, but he was more inclined to joke about his faults than to flaunt his virtues. He was tremendously proud of his son, and admired the man and father he has become. He looked forward to seeing his young grandson grow up to achieve his own dreams, hoping to help support his education when the time came. He is survived by his son Derrick (Colleen) Bovenkamp, grandson David, mother Gretta Bovenkamp, brothers Kenneth Bovenkamp, Doug (Linda) Bovenkamp, Daryl Bovenkamp, Jeff (Karen) Bovenkamp, and sisters Linda (Tom) Bishop, Carol Welch, Cheryl Miner, Debbie (Todd) Lingbloom, and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to his grandson David Bovenkamp's college fund savings account at any Whatcom Education Credit Union Branch.
