Ruth Caroline Martin, 101, died on March 1, 2014 in Bellingham. She was born in Ray, North Dakota on May 19, 1912, where her father, Ira S. AbPlanalp, was a pioneer doctor. In 1930, Ruth graduated from Williston High School where she played the violin in the orchestra and tennis with her sister, Helen. Ruth attended Valley City College then taught school for 2 years. She married William "Bill" Martin in 1934 and they moved to Bellingham in 1939 where Bill worked for the Bellingham Herald. He founded Bellingham Roofing Company in 1952. Ruth graduated in Home Economics from Western Washington College of Education (now WWU) in 1954 and was a substitute teacher in Bellingham. Ruth has been an active member of the First Congregational Church for over 70 years. She accounted for her longevity to a loving family. She is preceded in death by her husband Bill and son David. She is survived by her daughter Jane Hagen of North Beach, MD, and her son Robert (Eva) Martin of Everett, WA. Ruth had 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside Service will be held Thursday, March 6, 2014, 2:00 PM at Greenacres Memorial Park, 5700 Northwest Dr., Ferndale, Washington 98248 with Reverend Alan Claasen of First Congregational Church officiating.
