William Beckett passed away peacefully of natural causes in St. Josephs' Hospital, Bellingham, WA on the morning of Jan 9, 2014. He was 87 years young. Born in his parent's home on H Street Hill Road, Blaine, to Sidney and Alice Beckett. The eldest of 3 sons and two sisters, he was thrust into a household leading role at the early age of 12 when his father passed away suddenly. He attended the Blaine School system and was drafted into the Army out of high school during WWII where he served in the Pacific theatre. He married his Canadian girlfriend Delia June Dykstra May 11, 1948 and they proceeded to make their home in Blaine where they lived always. They had two sons, William, Leonard, and their daughter, Betsie Marie. Bill served his community as a longtime member of the local Blaine Fire Dept. And faithfully enjoyed his job with the Blaine Marina of over 50 years working for his lifelong close friend Bud Dodd and family. Although he was a very private person, a multitude of people called him his friend. Not being well traveled, his reading of history was one means of relaxation, he did so a lot and was knowledgeable about the history of many peoples. He loved the earth and all its creatures. Gardening was a favorite pastime, and the nature he loved so much was always his comforting friend. All creatures great and small, domestic or otherwise, uncannily seemed to know he was their good friend. Bill also enjoyed music and for over 40 years he faithfully and proudly enjoyed, supported, and listened in various local venues, to son Lenny's own lifelong passion for playing music. Most recently, his great-grandchildren had given him much joy as he watched and participated with them in their various endeavors, functions, and personal growth. Bill's death is preceded by his father Sidney, step father Joe Fox, mother Alice, brother George, and loving wife of 65 years Delia. He is survived by sons Bill and wife Mona, of Birch Bay and Leonard and wife Marcia of Sandy Point Shores, Bellingham, daughter Betsie Marie and husband Dennis Upton of Bellingham, brother James, sisters Lois and Toots, granddaughters Jenell (Steve) Tevelde, Andrea (Mike) Bump, grandson Canaan Upton, grandsons Russell, Jeff, & James Moquin, 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Bill will be laid to rest with his father, Sidney Beckett, on H Street Hill Cemetary, Blaine Washington. On his request, there will be no public services.
