Cecile B. Hewes

1917-2013 Cecile B. Hewes, a resident of Roberts Road in Manchester and wife of the late Kenneth Hewes, Sr. passed away December 17, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. Cecile was born in Manchester Village, Vermont on September 11, 1917. She was the daughter of Cecil C. Bull and Edith Augusta (Fairman), attended local schools and graduated from Burr & Burton Seminary in 1935. She was a member of Magna Charta Dames of 1215, who in that year forced King John to grant Magna Charta. Cecile is a decendent of Robert DeVere, Earl of Oxford who died in 1221 and was also a decendent of Govenor William Dudley and Leete. She served as Regent for two terms of the daughters of the American Revolution from 1989-1992 and 1992-1995. She was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Manchester Center, Vermont and a member of the First Baptist Church of Manchester. Cecile was the co-owner of Hewe's Market along with her husband Kenneth for forty eight years. Through their generosity, she and her husband helped many families that were less fortunate that had to go without groceries or meat. They were featured in the Boston Globe along with their store on June 17, 1979 and Herb Trafford painted a picture of the store for a fundraiser for the Rotary Club. Matthew Perry, a graduate of the Swain School of design did a mixed media on wood of the store which now is owned by Dr. James Most. Cecile is survived by her children Orrin L. Hewes and his wife Judy, Kenneth Hewes, Jr. and his wife Lorraine, Leona Squires, Herbert Hewes, Sr. and his wife Maryann and Richard Hewes of Manchester, Nora Gordon and her husband Duane of Front Royal, VA, Lila Wilcox and her husband Harley of Vestal, NY, Cecile King and Donna Parker and her husband Ben of Manchester, sister Mabel Pruden of Castelon, NY, sisters-in-law Betty Miller, Joyce Tarbell and Sue Bull, good friends Terry Carey, Jackie Pecor and Delores and Henry Perry and many grandchildren, great grandchildren , great-great grandchildren , nieces,nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Hewse Sr., whom she married July 2, 1936 in Arlington, Vermont. Mr. Hewes died May 25, 1987. She was also preceded in death by brothers Roger, Elmer, Robert and Charles Bull, sister Charlotte Giles and Son-in-laws Vernon Squiers, Stanley King, Sr. and Richard Keyes, Sr. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Cecile will be held in the spring.
