John P. Griffin Jr.
1944 - 2014 BENNINGTON John "Jack" P. Griffin Jr., 69, of Walloomsac Road, Bennington, died on April 10, 2014, at Albany Medical Center, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 11, 1944, in Albany, N.Y., he was son of the late Anna Cone and John P Griffin Sr. Jack was a 1962 graduate of Bennington Catholic High School and then earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business from Boston College in 1966. He was a member of ROTC and was Honorably Discharged from the Marines Corps in 1965. He married the love of his life, Carol Farrington, on June 10, 1967. Jack owned and operated Griffin's Furniture Stores in Arlington and Brattleboro, Vt. until 1981. He then founded John P Griffin Real Estate and was involved in Property Development, Property Management, as well as commercial and home sales. He was a member of the Bennington Planning Commission, served on the Bennington Housing Authority Board, and also served on the Governor's Economic Advisor Board during Governor Howard Dean Administration. Jack was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart St. Francis where he served as an altar boy and later was married. His faith was a very important part of his life and, in his earlier years, he served as a Parish Council Member. He was also a longtime member of the Bennington Elks Club. Jack enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his granddaughters. Jack was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, and Boston Bruins. He is survived by his wife and his devoted children, Michael V Griffin (Hanna Asipovich), John P Griffin, III (Laura Nadeau), and Eric L Griffin (Melissa Forystek); his sister, Margaret "Peg" Pare; grandchildren, Gabrielle and Hannah Griffin, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Eileen Smith, Anne Peck, Joan Allen, and Helen Faryniarz. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be held at the MAHAR SON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer, and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m., where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. Private committal services will take place at the family lot in St. John's Cemetery, North Bennington, at the convenience of the family.
