Bernard Cardinal Obituary
Bernard " Bernie" P. Cardinal

1949-2014 PITTSFIELD Bernard " Bernie" P. Cardinal, age 65, of 90 Chapel St. Pittsfield, died Thursday morning at his home after a long battle with cancer. Born in Colchester, Vt., on March 25, 1949, he was the son of the late Romeo and Joyce Patnode Cardinal. He attended the local schools there and was a graduate of Colchester High School where he played varsity soccer. A tour coach driver for the U.S. Express Bus Co. of E. Longmeadow, Mass., he received many commendations and recommendations before retiring after 12 years as a result of ill health. Mr. Cardinal was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. Bernie enjoyed renovating homes as an expert, finisher carpenter for his neighborhood friends, at no charge as he believed it was important to "give back" to others. Playing Santa Claus during the holiday season brought him his greatest joy. He would entertain children in the area hospitals, private parties as well as the neighborhood. Some children he remembered from past years, which was a big hit with kids and parents alike. Mr. Cardinal built doll houses for area charitable raffles and for various church bazaars. He was an active participant in the annual Relay for Life and the campaign, Strides Against Breast Cancer, and he also assisted in the efforts of Habitat for Humanity. Personally, he enjoyed building model cars as he had raced stock cars many years ago. He and his wife, the former Joy M. Bishop-Lasher, were married May 13, 1995. They met on a BMC Rec. Association sponsored trip to Washington, D.C. They often joked that Joy brought home the biggest and best souvenir from that trip. Other survivors are his sons, Bernard P. Cardinal, Jr. and Jason Cardinal of Brattleboro, Vt., Michael Cardinal of Lewiston, Maine., and Michael Lasher of Reno, Nev., his brothers, Ronald (Beverly), William (Geri), Gerald, Douglas and Jay Cardinal and his two sisters, Brenda Deuso-Cardinal and Deone Benoit, a grandson, Dylan and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He will be especially missed by his little buddy, Sasquatch, the Chihuahua that was always by his side. He was predeceased by his brother, Michael. Bernie embraced his Abinaki heritage and was honored to be a recipient of a Smudge Ceremony, a Native American rite shortly before his death. FUNERAL NOTICE: Cardinal, Bernard "Bernie" P., age 65, died May 15th. Calling hours at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be SUNDAY from 3 to 6 P.M. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday morning at 9:00 A.M. at St. Mark's Church, with the Rev. John C. Salatino, pastor, officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the Mass in St. Mark's Father Leonard Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in care of the funeral home.
