1943 - 2013 PITTSFIELD Joel Gordon, 70, of Doreen Street, passed away at home last week, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in the Bronx and raised in Boston by parents, Arthur and Pearl Gordon, Joel graduated from Boston Latin School in 1960, and was educated at Harvard University, where he graduated with degrees in chemistry and physics in 1964. He then earned a master's degree in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.
He met his wife, the love of his life, Kathy Cullinane of Springfield, while both were working in Boston, and they spent 45 happy years together.
Joel worked as a chemist and lab director at the Pittsfield Wastewater Treatment Plant for more than 30 years, retiring in 2008. He was honored for his contributions to the field by the New England Water Environment Association. He created and ran a website about water pollution and treatment which has helped to educate students and professionals around the world.
Joel loved science, photography, music, bike riding, cross-country skiing, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, the natural beauty of the Berkshires and, most of all, spending time with his family. He was an avid computing enthusiast and an early member of the local Commodore Computer Club. He also spoke fluent German.
Joel will be dearly missed by his family, wife Kathy; sons, Peter and Jeffrey; daughter, Katy and her husband, Thoralf, and sister, Ruth. Also, he will be missed by sisters- and brothers-in-law, Terry, Anne and Paul, Joan and Fred, niece, Amy and her husband, John; nieces, Beth and Nina, and nephew, Johnny.
He was predeceased by brother-in-law, Carl.
Joel's family is grateful for the wonderful care he received from Dr. Michael DeLeo and the doctors, nurses and staff at Berkshire Hematology/Oncology, Berkshire Medical Center, Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association, and HospiceCare in The Berkshires.
FUNERAL NOTICE: At Joel's request, the family will hold a private memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joel's memory to "BMC New Cancer Center" on the Hillcrest Campus, in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
