John J. McHugh

1921 - 2014 PERU John J. McHugh, 92, of Peru, died peacefully Sunday morning, Feb. 23, 2014, at Berkshire Medical Center, with his family at his bedside. He was born on Nov. 21, 1921, in Pittsfield, the son of Thomas and Mary Brown McHugh. He attended Pittsfield High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941 and was stationed in England during World War II. Upon discharge from the military in 1944, he attended Wentworth Institute in Boston and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. Mr. McHugh was employed as an aircraft electrician with United Airlines in San Francisco, Calif., and British Overseas Airways Corp. at the former Idlewild International Airport, now JFK, in New York. He also was employed by Pan American World Airways at JFK airport as a Flight Engineer Officer in 1955, flying on the Boeing Stratocruiser, the Boeing 707 and the Boeing 747, until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Pittsfield, where he served as an usher and also was a member of the Dalton Rotary Club. John is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Deckert, originally of Chicago, and his three children; daughter, Beverly and her husband, Bruce, and their children, Kate and Kevin; daughter, Carol and her husband, Mark, and their daughter, Melissa; a son, Douglas, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Andrew P. McHugh, who died on Oct. 23, 2013. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for John J. McHugh will be Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield, Mass., with a 12 noon service at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Timothy Weisman, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, care of the Dwyer Funeral Home in his memory.
